When my little girl was little, she often woke up at night. I had to get up to her, feed her and hug her to sleep again. At first, such motives were not easy for me. In time, however, I began to get used to it, and even to see some advantages – because I could see what was happening in the world when everyone was asleep. I noticed that there was a light burning in the windows of a nearby office building until late at night, although the workers had long gone home – it was the cleaners who were cleaning the offices. That when everyone rests, the streets of an empty city are hard to get rid of. That the neighbor is scoping at the desk and writing something. That a mouse ran through the lawn. And that already at 5 am, the first cars loaded under the roof with fresh bread are coming to the shops. In a word, I realized that the night was full of secrets that I would never have discovered if I didn't have to get up to my daughter. You want to find out what else is going on in the dark? Then listen. Monika Utnik-Strugała – a graduate of Polish and Italian Studies at the University of Warsaw, a journalist, and a longtime editor of interior magazines.
