Additional power is not required, the disk just plug in and start using it. Disks with a capacity of up to 2 TB are formatted on FAT32 so they can work on Windows and Mac OSx right away. Disks with a capacity of more than 2 TB are formatted in NTFS, which is Windows compatible, but for Mac systems, it requires reformatting the disk to HFS+ so that it is fully compatible with Mac OSx operating systems. The HFS+ formatting can be done using the Verbatim VHD Formatter formatting tool available on disk. For increased security, Nero BackItUp Essentials software is provided to back up your laptop or desktop hard drive. With BackUp Essentials, you can back up all files, folders and disks at any time or plan to automatically back up at a specified time to provide even more security. The Verbatim Store 'n' Go Portable Hard Drives are also equipped with Green Button software to save energy. Green Button software stops the hard drive when it is inactive, ensuring increased efficiency and energy savings. There are 3 “sleeping” options available. Set the hold mode to be activated after 10 minutes of use or using 10 minute increments to a maximum time of 120 minutes. Set the disk to hold immediately by double-clicking the Green Button icon on your desktop. You can also disable holding the disk by selecting the option "Never Suspend the disk".
